Prevention of fake accounts?
#1
Does anyone know of a way to screen out bots and fake accounts?

I am seeing some new users that look suspicious, but I do not want to be too aggressive and not allow them in, just in case I am wrong. Sure, I can ban them after the fact... but I was thinking of adding something like a Captcha as part of the registration process, I am just not entirely sure how to go about that.

I have had three accounts now that have tried to spam the site with garbage related to the sex trade. This is frustrating, but not wholly unexpected. I have seen several registrations that have seemed suspicious, but I did/do not want to be Machiavellian in my approach to managing this community. So I will continue to ban and prune where needed.

Thank you for your patience.

The sheer number of fake/bot accounts that register for this community is out of hand! I purge them and their garbage as soon as I spot it, but this is becoming most of what I do. I need to find a better solution.

I am so sick and tired of having to go through threads and purge the spam accounts that have registered here. Given the volume of spam I have had to purge (noise) vs. the posts from legitimate members (signal), I am seriously wondering if it is worth maintaining the Community.

In the other areas -- not in this thread please -- let me know if you truly want a place to discuss Arcanum (all versions). I need to know this is worth maintaining.

And this last post (above) was almost immediately followed by two posts by spam accounts that I had to clean up. Sad

I am sad. I am going to leave for a while.

I have added a CAPTCHA feature. We will see if this helps.

This continues, and it continues to get worse.

There have been no posts by legitimate users to this community (other than me) for a long time. However, the number of posts I am having to delete and the number of users I am having to block continues to grow.

If this situation does not improve by May 31st, I will be closing down this community and trying something else entirely.
